Your soffits, fascias and gutters are something you may never have heard of but have most definitely seen. Located just under your roof, they all play an important role in protecting and supporting the structure of your roof – but they can often get neglected.

Forgetting about your fascias, soffits and guttering can be costly as, if they get damaged, this can leave your roof vulnerable and, in the worst-case scenario, water could actually get into the interior of your home.

So, what can you do to tackle this?

By regularly maintaining your roofline, you are able to spot any damage or issues early before they become unrepairable.

In this article, we take a closer look at how you should maintain your soffits, fascias and guttering so your roof is well protected and your home is safe from any water damage.

Maintaining your fascias, soffits and guttering

Fascias & Soffits

  • Flaking paint

Flaking and peeling paint is a more common problem with timber soffits and fascia boards, and isn’t exactly aesthetically pleasing. Not only does it not look good, flaking paint can in fact be a sign that the wood underneath has started to swell due to dampness – so when you see the paint of your fascias and soffits start to flake and peel, it is important you check for any signs of rot before it starts to spread.

By sanding and repainting your soffits and fascias as soon as the paint starts to peel, you can help to rejuvenate their look.

  • Damp or rot

In order to prevent it from spreading, it is important to spot any signs of damp or rot early as this puts the integrity of your roof at risk.  In some cases, you are able to just replace the affected area as opposed to the entire soffit or fascia board to help prevent the spread.

Guttering

  • Inspecting for leaks

On the surface a leaking guttering doesn?t seem like much of a problem.  However, in fact, it can lead to more serious issues as it  may cause your roof to be flooded by rainwater. A leaking roof not only encourages mould to grow but can also cause rainwater to rot your roof. This is never an ideal situation as a rotting roof is very difficult and costly to repair. The best way to avoid this is to inspect your gutters for any leaks and repair them as soon as you spot them before the problem gets worse.

It isn?t very difficult to spot a leaking gutter as water will pour from the middle of them. Fixing a leaking gutter is also a relatively simple procedure as you can use sealant or patches to fill in any holes in your guttering.

  • Unclogging gutters

It is common over time for debris such as leaves and twigs to collect in your guttering and isn?t something to worry about. However, if this debris starts to build up it can prevent the water from flowing away. If this goes unchecked, a clogged gutter can be costly as rainwater can overflow and leak into your roof and even your house. This can be easily avoided by regularly cleaning and removing debris from your gutters to help prevent your gutter from clogging up.
